Core Value #3 Always Be Learning

When you think about Turnkey, we want our core values to come to mind. Our seven core values tell you who we are, what we believe is important, and what we strive for daily. Our core values are:

  • Provide Remarkable Service

  • Work as a Team

  • Always be Learning

  • Find a Way to Win

  • Take Ownership

  • Leave Your Egos at the Door

  • Have Fun!

These core values let the world know what we stand for when we interact with them. We use these core values and combine them with our unique spirit to work towards Remarkablism ™. This phrase was coined by our founder and focuses on being the best person you can be. This takes time and is a never-ending cycle of self-discovery and purposeful growth. If you’ve been following our blog series, you know that we are concentrating on each core value so that you can have a better understanding of who we are and what we stand for in our daily practices.

Now, it’s time to focus on core value #3: Always Be Learning.

Core Value #3: Always Be Learning

If you think that learning is over once you graduate from college and earn a degree, you’re wrong. Learning happens every day. When you are open to always learning, you are curious. You want to know more about the world around you. You look for feedback that can help you improve. This feedback can help you as you strive for Remarkablism ™, as we mentioned above.  When you’re looking for ways to learn, you not only seek that knowledge from others, but also from books. Core value #3 works with our first two core values: provide remarkable service, and work as a team. If we’re not evolving and changing, we can’t work as a team. When we can’t work as a team, we can’t provide remarkable service.

To always be on a learning path, you need to practice several fundamentals. This will help you realize your core value with your actions.

Seek Feedback Everywhere

When you seek feedback from everywhere, it allows you to learn new ways of doing things and how to troubleshoot problems. Someone may have a solution you never knew existed. By seeking feedback from everywhere, you can implement this knowledge as you constantly learn how to improve. By seeking feedback, you can get a first-hand account of improvements you can make to up your game. This is a tool we can use in every aspect of our job. We can ask our customers and our boss what we can do to improve. We can use this information to become more successful. When we seek feedback, we are always finding ways to learn.

Debrief Daily with a WBH Tool

To keep the core value of always learning top of mind, it’s important to debrief daily using a WBH tool. This is a critical tool for self-improvement. This is a personal reflection tool that you can use daily. You can do this at the end of the business day or at night before you go to bed. You can reflect on the day and ask yourself these questions:

  • What did I do well?

  • What could I have done better?

  • And how could I do it?

As you reflect on these questions, put the answers in writing. This helps to hold yourself accountable. By putting it in writing, you’re more likely to put your words into action.

Make Reading a Habit

When you make reading a habit, and not a chore, you will always learn something new. Many people form an aversion to reading from childhood if they were forced to read things they had no interest in. This can turn them off to reading. But if you can read something you’re interested in and want to learn about, you can become a more avid reader and actually enjoy doing it. While we can learn from feedback and reflection, sometimes we have to learn from other people’s wisdom. This is why reading is so important. It provides us with this learning tool. The most successful people are avid readers. By reading, you not only gain knowledge, but you also exercise your brain.

Reading will help develop your mental muscle just as going to the gym develops your physical muscle. Reading can help you focus and concentrate. You can take this and use this in every part of your life. Sitting down to read is much like meditating. It triggers your parasympathetic nervous system and helps with healing. It can help to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. It tells your body to relax, which is why many people read before bed.  So, think about how much you read and how you can find time every day to read a little more. If you don’t have the time, make the time. You’ll be surprised where you can find time to read.

Put One Thing Into Practice

If you’re taking action to learn new things, but don’t put what you’ve learned into practice, it’s all for nothing. But you don’t want to overload your system and put more than one thing into practice at a time. If you do, you’ll overload your system. If you try to do too much, you’ll abandon the effort. If you incorporate one thing at a time, you can allow yourself to adapt to the change. We all know that change can be stressful. Some people can deal with more change than others and do not get as stressed. Knowing how much change you can handle without becoming overly stressed is key. While you want to push yourself, you don’t want to push so far that you’ll abandon all of the positive change you’ve already accomplished. Look at one thing you can put into practice, and make it a habit. You’ll see the positive results and can then try to incorporate another action. By doing this, you can keep the learning cycle constantly moving forward.

When you keep all of these things top of mind, you will encourage yourself to always be learning. You will see positive changes in your life which will propel you in your goal to achieve Remarkablism ™.
