Core Value #5 Take Ownership

If you’ve been following our blog series, you know that we are driving home the idea of core values. What are they and why are they important? A core value is a timeless belief. It is short and memorable. It can be something as simple as just two words, like “work smarter”.  You don’t need many words to get the point across. At Turnkey, our core values let the world know what’s important to us and how we’re going to achieve that.

While businesses may have different core values, at Turnkey, we focus on 7.

These are:

  • Provide Remarkable Service

  • Work as a Team

  • Always be Learning

  • Find a Way to Win

  • Take Ownership

  • Leave Your Egos at the Door

  • Have Fun!

These core values are important to us because they exemplify what needs to be done for us to achieve Remarkablism ™.  If you’ve never heard of Remarkablism ™, this was a phrase that our founder coined. It focuses on being the best person you can be every day. But this does not happen overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, as you embark on a path of self-discovery and personal growth. One of the ways we do this is to take ownership, which is core value #5.

How Do We Take Ownership?

When we take ownership, we are honoring our word. We are taking on projects and tasks with pride. As we take ownership, we also safeguard our precious resources. Taking ownership is about slowing down and focusing on the process. Do each task to perfection. This will help to make you happier and help to focus on the present.

Take Pride In Your Work

Slow down and focus on the process. No matter what you’re doing, take pride in it. Even if it seems like it’s the smallest task, be proud of what you’re doing. How do you treat the tasks that you need to do? Are you rushing to just finish, or are you focusing on the job? How you answer those questions will result in the product. If you’re just rushing through and not focusing on doing a good job, your reputation is also on the line. What kind of reputation do you want to build? Remember the way you do anything, is the way you do everything.  Think about whether you want to be average, below average, or above average. This will translate into how you do tasks. As you reflect on your work, think about the tasks that are done well and those that need improvement.

Honor Your Word

You should be living by this fundamental both at work and in your daily life outside of work. If you honor your word, you take pride in your work, which will help you to take ownership of everything in your life. When you honor your word, you follow through on your commitments. If you say you’re going to do something, you’re going to do it. People can rely on. This helps to build your reputation. Be mindful of what you agree to do. If you really don’t have time to do it, or just don’t know how, be honest. This will help you to best honor your word. You may be able to make an agreement that allows you to honor your word while getting the task done.

Deliver Results

Think about the three key results that you need to take ownership of in your position. If you take ownership of those, it will drive results. When you’re crystal clear about what your results are, you are able to honor your word to get these done. You will take pride in your work because you know what needs to be done to take ownership and deliver results.  Once you identify your three deliverables, it will help you to better make decisions and focus. It will help to provide consistent growth for both you and your company.  Think about what would happen if everyone did this. It may seem like something small. But, in the end, it would make a dramatic impact.

Be Productive

This fundamental builds upon the fundamental of delivering results. If we can make the most of our time and be productive, we will drive results. Some people confuse being busy with being productive. But people can be busy doing things that are not productive. These things don’t help them deliver results and take pride in their work. If you are not completing tasks that help to deliver results, you are not being productive. What do you have to focus on to be productive? People assume that saying yes to everything will help them be productive. But sometimes saying no is what helps you to be the most productive. By doing this, you can focus on the tasks that will help you get the job done. Think about what you need to do to be productive at work, but not burnt out when you get home. Doing this can make all the difference.

Prioritize the things that will make you most productive. For many people, this means getting more sleep. To achieve this, you may have to skip out on some social activities so that you’re getting the rest you need to be productive both at work and at home.

Safeguard Company Resources

This fundamental is extremely important when it comes to taking ownership. Our resources are time and money. If we are wasting time and money, you need to know how to better allocate both of these resources. If you notice that time and money are being wasted at work, speak up. This is important to reach Remarkablism ™ and to have a good work environment. You want to zero in on the bottom liine so that everyone can benefit. If you do this, people will see better salaries and benefits. While you may not be able to control your revenue, you can control your expenses. This is one way you can take ownership. Think about the resources that you can control that will help to increase productivity and ultimately, profits.

When you put all of these fundamentals together, you can see how they can help you to take ownership and be the best person you can be.
