How to Build Your Core Values and Benefit from Ours

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been focusing on our core values at Turnkey, why they’re important to us, and how they help us to achieve the Remarkablism ™ that our company thrives on. As you may recall, core values are timeless principles. They are short, yet memorable. They effectively convey the assignment, ensuring it can be completed and that everyone benefits. These core values help us to work towards Remarkablism ™, a term our founder has coined. It refers to the never-ending cycle of self-discovery and purposeful growth. To put it simply, Remarkablism ™ is about being the best you.

When we start exploring core values, we begin to see how they impact our lives, both in and out of the workplace. We’re going to share some tips on how you can build your core values and how the ones we’ve developed at Turnkey can benefit you.

Building Core Values Step by Step

As with anything that’s important, building core values is a process. But when you start peeling the layers, you’ll see that it all starts with determining what’s most important to you.

Brainstorm Values

Here’s where it all starts. Think about what’s most important to your company. When you have some ideas, ask employees what they think the company’s current values are and what they think can be improved upon in the future. Compile a complete list that everyone can review.

Group and Eliminate

As you look at your list of  current values, group ones that are similar and that you agree with, and eliminate those that don’t best serve your business. The goal is to end up with about 10 values that truly reflect what your company is and what it does. If you don’t end up with 10 at the beginning, don’t worry. They will come in time as you continue to explore the issue of core values.

Distill Core Elements

Once you have your list, decide which ones are vital to your company’s success. Whichever ones you take from the list, be sure that they will play a vital role in your company’s success. They need to be reasonable because you and your employees will be putting them into action.

Draft a Statement

Once your final set of core values is established, you can begin to draft your first core values statements. We recommend using bullet points or numbered lists because they are easier to read. You may need to draft a few versions so that you end up with the most concise version to convey your value. Remember, keep it short so that it’s memorable.

Finalize Core Values

Part of finalizing your core values is reviewing them with other employees, customers, or focus groups consisting of upper-level management. Ask them for ideas about which drafts of the core values statement best reflect the company. This feedback is going to be useful as you edit your core values and come up with a list you are satisfied with as the final product.

Communicate the Statement

Once you have everything ready to go, it’s time to share your core values with your employees and the world. Everyone will be able to see what you find most important. You can do this by holding training sessions or publishing your core values on a website or in a newsletter.

Live the Values

Now that everyone is on the same page, or at least on the right path, it’s time to integrate them into your everyday practices. Make them part of your daily business operations so they can be part of your company’s mission.

How to Bring Your Core Values to Life

You’ve done all the hard work; now it’s time to bring your core values to life within your company. You can do this in four steps:

  • Modeling

  • Hiring

  • Onboarding

  • Development

All company leaders should model core values in their daily work. When employees see them doing this, they’ll understand the expectation, and hopefully follow. Hiring can be structured around core values. This will be most beneficial because hiring managers can see right away if candidates reflect core values and if they would be a good fit. This can extend through the interview process. Finding employees who exemplify core values from the beginning can reduce the turnover rate because everyone knows the expectations from the start. During the onboarding process, new hires can receive the necessary training that will incorporate the company’s core values. They’ll have time to ask questions and see how they can incorporate these core values into their daily life. Employees can receive development training about core values regularly. For example, a review can take place every 3 months to provide the training that is specific to their department.

What Are Our Core Values and How Can You Benefit

At Turnkey, we have 7 core values that we strive for. These are:

  1. Provide Remarkable Service

  2. Work as a Team

  3. Always be Learning

  4. Find a Way to Win

  5. Take Ownership

  6. Leave Your Egos at the Door

  7. Have Fun!

Each of these core values is significant because they help us to achieve the Remarkablism ™ we’ve been telling you about.  When you look at our core values, which one or ones stick out to you the most? Which ones do you think you can benefit from? As we take a quick snapshot of each one, think about how they can play an integral role in your life.

Provide Remarkable Service

At Turnkey, we strive to provide remarkable service. By doing this, we surpass expectations every time. When you strive to provide remarkable service, you’re always looking to outdo your previous performance. There is always room for improvement. When you provide remarkable service, you help to make your company memorable and stand out in the process. People certainly remember those who have gone above and beyond in their service.

Work as a Team

To provide remarkable service, you need to work as a team. Working as a team helps to accomplish this goal. As we say at Turnkey,  “together we go far”.

Always be Learning

Being open to always learn makes you curious. This helps with self-improvement and can help your team as a whole. You need to evolve and learn so that you can always provide remarkable service. What are some ways you can think out of the box to always be on a learning path?

Find a Way to Win

Finding a way to win means being creative. Think of ways you can adapt to challenges while maintaining your integrity. Use your resources to their fullest. This is one that everyone can benefit from both in and out of the workplace.

Take Ownership

Take ownership of your work. Slow down and focus on the process so that you can be proud of your work. When we take ownership, we zero in on the task at hand, which helps to provide remarkable service. This process also helps you to focus on the present and not worry so much about the things you can’t control.

Leave Your Egos at the Door

Leaving our egos at the door helps us to make the company a priority. Have a larger mindset that extends past what is immediately around you. When everyone can do this, we all benefit, individually and as a whole.

Have Fun!

Having fun should be the spirit behind everything you do. When you’re having fun and finding the joy in things, you are more likely to want to get the job done. Be present and find gratitude, you’ll thank us later!
