Core Value #7  Have Fun

If you’ve been following our blog series, you know that we’ve been telling you all about our core values at Turnkey. We put a huge emphasis on core values because they shape who we are and what we do not only today, but in the future. Through our series here, we’ve shared how we apply our core values and how you can use them as a starter to create your own set of core values. As you’ll recall, a core value is a timeless belief that is short and memorable. A core value can be just a few short words that help you get your point across.

At Turnkey, there are seven core values that we strive for:

  • Provide Remarkable Service

  • Work as a Team

  • Always be Learning

  • Find a Way to Win

  • Take Ownership

  • Leave Your Egos at the Door

  • Have Fun!

Each core value plays a role in helping us to achieve Remarkablism ™.  This term, as coined by our founder, expresses the results you can achieve when you live up to your potential. Core values help us to be the best person we can be. Focusing on core values helps to put us on a path of self-discovery and personal growth.

How do we achieve these core values?

By working on our fundamentals.

A fundamental is a specific behavior that is stated as a clear “do this” action. A fundamental starts with a verb to describe what needs to be done, names the situation, and defines what the expectation is. Fundamentals are daily behaviors that make core values observable and repeatable. Now, it’s time to take a closer look at core value #7 and the fundamentals that go along with it, Have Fun!

Have Fun!

This is our favorite core value! This is the spirit behind everything. Having fun is about celebrating our victories, and being present for each other, and finding gratitude. Think about the people you work with and how much time you spend with them. It’s probably the most time you spend with anyone throughout the day, even your family. Shouldn’t this time be fun? Look for ways to make this happen.

Why go to work to be miserable and complain? Enjoy your time. Find time for fun while still getting the job done.

Find the Small Victories

Every day, we need to find the small victories. If you don’t, it will feel like a daily grind. What are some small victories? Perhaps closing a ticket or making a customer smile is a small victory. While little, these small victories carry great significance. The little victories add up to the big victories that come later on.  What do you do daily to reach your goals? Think about the things you do every day and find purpose in what seem like little steps. You not only will start to find purpose in what you do, but you’ll be a lot happier along the way. What are the mini victories that you take for granted? Think about these and start celebrating them!

Celebrate the Milestones

This fundamental is about finding a balance between the need to achieve and having fun. Sometimes we need to slow down and look at the progress we’ve made. Think about the things that are frustrating you now and how your situation was a year ago. If you look at these, you’ll see how far you’ve come. Celebrate these milestones. Even if you’re not where you want to be yet, celebrate where you are today. This motivation will help you get to where you want to be tomorrow.

Don’t race through life. Take some pleasure in the journey. What are your milestones, personally and professionally? Think about how you can celebrate these milestones. Have the celebration match the accomplishment. Be sure to take pleasure in your accomplishments. Think about your goals for the next year and how you’re going to reward yourself when you reach them. This will help you to not only achieve your goals, but have fun while you’re doing it.

Choose an Attitude of Gratitude

This is one of the most life-changing fundamentals. If you practice gratitude on a daily basis, you will improve your well-being in all aspects of your life, physically, mentally, and emotionally. When you are practicing gratitude, you can’t feel negativity at the same time. If you practice gratitude every day and count your blessings in life, the negative things will become insignificant. It’s easy to overlook all of our blessings. It’s easy to take everything for granted. If we can start to find gratitude, we can get rid of suffering. When you look for the good in things, the suffering can begin to go away. Think about the things that we take for granted. How can we be more grateful? How can we put gratitude into practice? When you start thinking this way, you will see things start to turn around.

Make Time to Play and Laugh

This is about finding the perfect balance in life. While you go to work, you still find time to have fun and play. Sometimes there are times to play and laugh at work. Look for these opportunities. It can help to get you over the creative bridge. Think about how you can find more time for play and laughter during the day, while still being productive.

Enjoy the Journey

This is what life is all about. If you’re always thinking about what’s next, you’re never enjoying the present. Think about the times when you’re doing mundane tasks, like washing the dishes. During these times, our minds can start to wander. We begin to think about the future, but never take time to enjoy the present moment, even if it is just washing the dishes! Consider what Albert Einstein once said, “There are two ways to live your life, as if everything is  a miracle, or as if nothing is a miracle.” Which way do you want to live? Isn’t choosing to live like everything is a miracle more enjoyable? Think about how you can be more present for the people around you. Think about how you can get more out of the mundane aspects of our lives.

When you put all of these fundamentals together, you can achieve our core value of having fun, and you’ll actually enjoy what you’re doing in the process!
